Martin Brodeur and the New Jersey Devils pay their first visit to DC Friday night and may be met with a sea of mirrored sunglasses.
The background: Brodeur recently issued a complaint about Ovie's old mirrored visor, saying it prevented goaltenders from seeing his eyes. The NHL GMs in their enduring wisdom voted to prohibit Ovie and other players from wearing said visors anymore. The final vote? 29-1.
3 guesses who the dissenting vote came from...
Anyways, in response to Marty's complaint, Caps fans on the message boards are kicking off a movement to have everyone in attendance wear mirrored or dark sunglasses, particularly if sitting behind the NJ goal or bench but definitely not limited to those people. Apparently Goat (you know, the "Let's Go Caps" guy) and others are even planning on handing out shades to fans outside section 104/105. Edit: See the comments for more details on how to contribute to this worthy cause.
You have to love the ingenuity! I'll throw my support behind this 100% and echo a fellow blogger's call to get the word out - tell your friends, call your neighbors, dig up those old Top Gun aviator shades...you know you bought them...
For one game, we all wear sunglasses at night.

Anyone unable to attend the game, but willing to lend moral support in the form of chipping in money for sunglasses can donate money via paypal to wgoatboy@starpower.net
This is currently the style we're looking at ordering, as they resemble the "half-smoke, half mirrored" look that Ovie's visor did while he was still allowed to wear it. I think it will suit our needs, especially looking at a white sheet of ice under bright arena lights.
(Plus they're Dolce y Gabbana knock-offs, perfect for an Ovechkin tribute, right?)

Guys, do you have a count on how many cases you're going to buy or are you just going to buy as many as you can until the $$ runs out?
Currently we're at 13 cases (156 pairs should the supplier have stock), but the "pledge-lines" will be open until about 11:30am eastern on the 19th to see how many folks want to join in.
Anybody interested, please check out the thread on the official boards. We're evolving the plan as the hours progress.

You guys are awesome - great work on getting this organized so quickly!
I look forward to seeing all the shades at the Phone Booth.
Capschick, you can get half-price tix to all games remaining in 2006. Long story short, a friend is the coach of the AU women's hockey team and they have a promotion for half-price tix. They get a cut out of every ticket sold when you Use The Magic Words. Go to http://www.capstickets.com/puckstobucks.html and choose the game(s) you want. Enter "AU Lady Eagles" as the hockey club to get the discount. I'll definitely be buying one for that game.
If anyone else would like to promote this (*cough*fs*cough*) the AU Lady Eagles wouldn't mind one bit.
Another great idea, are fans in other markets this creative?
