The Aftermath

It's always fun after a win up in Canada to see what is being said, if only because it tends to get a lot more coverage than it does down here. It's that much more fun when the Caps, a lowly 15th place team, top the Sens, the mighty 1st place team. (Not to pick on Sens fans too much, because I like Ottawa. Just not for the next 24 hours or so.)

Here's a quick rundown of all the press clippings...

Do you get the sense that everyone is as surprised as we are?

On that same note, here's a little local flavor, just for fun:

And finally, here are a couple of great snippets from the Ottawa Sun's game story:

- "So, the starting goaltender of one team didn't make himself available to the media yesterday while the star forward of the other team took the time to go into the hallway - in his underwear - and read a couple of lines of 'Twas the Night Before Christmas for a feature TSN does each year. Alexander Ovechkin read the lines at least a half-dozen times, laughed while doing it and when he was thanked by Brent Wallace of TSN, replied "No problem." And you wonder what makes a guy a pro."

- Backstrom on his goal: "If it hit [Emery] in the head," said Backstrom afterward, "I'm sorry."

- "[F]ormer NHLer Bob Probert was outside the Caps dressing room after the game. He introduced himself to Ovechkin. The star walked away and asked somebody, "Grobert? Who's Grobert?"

dcsc: I know!! He just gets more and more adorable, I can't stand it.

teka: MWAHAHAHAHAHA...come over to the dark side, my dear. You know you want to ;)

(Oh, and Bourque played like 5 minutes. Can't really blame Hanlon for that one, Laich was really flying and beat him out for top line minutes...)

The Sens' broadcast had a clip of Ovechkin on the ice "about an hour and a half before game time". He was running around in his full-body spandex suit and Crocs, with a torn sock with GO CAPS written on it an a headband.

Great game last night.

I love the Ottawa Citizen's bold assertions: "The Washington Capitals aren't going to win the Stanley Cup this year. The Ottawa Senators might." Couple of problems here.

1. It is a little early in the season to be making any predictions about the Sens' Stanley Cup chances.

2. They seem awfully certain about the Caps not winning the Cup for this time in the season. The Caps still have a shot at the playoffs and any team that makes the playoffs can win the Cup. I have $20 on the Caps at 70-1 from my trip to Vegas earlier this year and I am not giving up on that money yet, dammit!

CC - yes it was a good game. Give the CAPS credit, they really took it to the SENS. The CAPS pretty much owned the SENS last year, even if the season series was 2-2. I am not surprised that they won. By time Ottawa woke up and realized that there was a game going on - it was too late, and really - Ovie is a force to be reckoned with. He is so powerful with the puck and his flare to the game is 10x more than #87 (dumb-ass) from the Penguins. He just seems to be having so much fun.

Congrats on the win. But some how you still owe me a beer don't ya? ;-)

OH and Chris? None in Ottawa takes the Ottawa Citizen seriously. During the play-offs last year, there was a 2 page article on how it was so wrong to boo Crosby. During the 1st round there was only two front page story about the team, the others were about Roberts (how Ottawa should have gotten him), Crosby and how Ottawa should not take the Penguins lightly.

Someone shoulda told Alex that "Grobert" was Ogilthorpe's little brother.
